Maison 1634

Maison 1634 feels like staying at your favorite sister’s house while she’s away on vacation, in the nicest way, with nothing but peace and quiet around you. It’s warm, personal, and full of character, and you feel at home right away. We stayed in the accessible room on the first floor. It’s a good fit for anyone with mobility concerns, and the elevator is a real luxury in a historic French town. The only small oddity was that the chair sat a bit low, though I suspect designers everywhere do that. There’s private parking right outside, and the recently renovated hotel was spotless, cute, and full of thoughtful details. The proprietress greeted us barefoot, holding a slightly bewildered tortoise she’d just found wandering on the guest side of the garden. Somehow, that was exactly the right welcome. In the morning, breakfast included fresh baguette and croissants, fruit, cheese, jams, granola, muesli, juice, and very good coffee. It made me slow down and remember I was in France. There’s a pool for hot, lazy summer days, too. I started writing Google Maps reviews like this after one inspired me to start a blog, Étranger Things: Between “tu” and “vous”. It’s been a lovely way to keep exploring French culture independently, one stay, croissant, and conversation at a time.
