Hostellerie St-Mathieu,The Originals Collection

Breakfast was generous, varied and full of quality choices, and the Hostellerie sits in an incredible spot beside the historic abbey and lighthouse at Pointe Saint-Mathieu. You can head straight out for cliff walks, with the wild Breton coast all around. The location is spectacular, but the day to day service during our three nights fell short of the luxury the hotel seems to promise. Laundry was a letdown: we paid €24 to have three polo shirts cleaned, but they came back late, only after we asked at reception, still unironed, and with one shirt stained. In the room, the hairdryer was old and awkward to use. The bed was poorly made, with a mattress cover that didn’t tuck in properly and a thin, undersized topper that felt cheap and uncomfortable. Linens and towels weren’t changed at all during our stay. The bathroom floor was washed each day, but the cleaning felt superficial, with corners and details left unattended. With better housekeeping, updated amenities and more professional service, the Hostellerie could match its remarkable setting. As things stand, it doesn’t deliver the level of luxury it suggests.

The service was excellent, attentive and polite, and the rooms were large, comfortable and well equipped. Views of the sea, abbey and lighthouse were incredible. Breakfast was very good, and worth the extra 25 euro. The pool and spa were nice, though a little dated.

We had the Bistro menu and enjoyed it, and the restaurants are reasonably priced. Maybe we’ll try the main restaurant next time. The drinks bar was great, with a special mention for the very friendly barman. All the staff were lovely and helpful. The hotel’s in a stunning spot, with wonderfully dark skies and an old WW2 German bunker close by. There’s loads to explore on the coastal walks, and we’d love to come back. The room was great, with a large bed, nice bathroom, big TV and coffee pod machine. A couple of pods per person would have been nice since they can’t cost much to provide, but that’s my only small gripe. My wife used the pool and said it was lovely and warm. There’s also a swimming pool, and the hotel has excellent bar and restaurant staff.

The bed was incredibly comfortable, and the breakfast had loads of choices and tasted really good. The location is another big plus, very close to a great panoramic view. I didn’t get to try the pool, spa or other relaxation facilities this time, but I hope to on a future visit.
