We’d been in the car with the family for a while and were tired, so I searched ahead for somewhere with a nice feel and good food. I’d barely checked two reviews, both mentioning tasty meals and comfortable rooms, before the high rating convinced me to book. I’m glad I took the chance. The room was reasonably priced for the standard, comfortable, and had a lovely bathroom. Outside, private gated parking opens onto a pretty garden, with part of the restaurant looking over it from a big conservatory warmed by a huge log burner. Breakfast was fresh, with none of the frozen, brought-in food you often get. The jam and marmalade were some of the best I’ve ever had, which is an odd thing to single out, but they really were superb. Dinner cost as much as the room, and you can choose between fine dining and a bistro. We were blown away by the food and wine. The staff were attentive without hovering. My husband even thanked me for the surprise, as though I’d planned it. We’ll definitely come back, this time on purpose.

We booked through Booking.com while on the road because the hotel said reception was open 24 hours. We arrived by car at night with two infants, but over the intercom they told us they didn’t have 24-hour reception and couldn’t accommodate us. They said they’d refund the payment the next day, but never did. We had to book somewhere else and ended up paying twice.

After five hours on the highway, lunch on the bistro terrace was good, and the garden was lovely. We were a family of four with children aged 6 and 8, and didn’t want to take them into the Michelin-starred dining room beside the terrace or disturb the guests there, so we chose the terrace again for dinner. Only one couple was eating in the Michelin-starred section, and we asked whether we could order one of its dishes, since both sections use the same kitchen. The bistro only offered three dishes each, but we were told that was the rule and they couldn’t serve us from the other menu. It felt like they could have done more to surprise a customer. Maybe some businesses are doing well enough that they don’t feel the need to go the extra mile.

The menu’s on the small side, but everything we tried was good. We had the fish with tagliatelle and vegetables, and the dessert was absolutely remarkable. The service was fantastic too.
