We had a roomy room and a big patio looking out toward the ocean and mountains, and Clara was wonderful. Dinner at the hotel restaurant was late on our first night, and one morning we ordered breakfast to the room. Both the food and the service were great. With a car, this hotel makes a handy base for day trips around the island, including Ajaccio, Bonaficio, Bastia and Porto Vecchio.

The private beach, with chaise lounges, made it easy to spend time by the water, and the sea views at breakfast were stunning. The meal itself was delicious and nicely presented. The staff were friendly and attentive, and the rooms are spacious, many with their own terrace. The interior feels elegant but comfortable, and the hotel puts on entertaining events. It’s an expensive stay, though the service, amenities, and seaside setting made it feel worthwhile. A lovely choice for a summer break in Corsica, with plenty of relaxation and entertainment.

The sea view, saltwater pool, and beautiful bay were the best parts of our stay. Breakfast was also a highlight: the buffet is small, but you can order omelets, freshly squeezed juice, French toast, or avocado dishes, cooked in the open kitchen in front of you. The rest of the experience fell well short of what I expected from a Sofitel 5★ hotel. We paid €535 for a room, and the rate didn't match the service, condition, or food, especially with corporate events and low-flying planes so often. The property feels outdated and overdue for renovation. For that price, there are better options with modern interiors, better beaches, and more enjoyable food. This place seems to trade on nostalgia for the 1990s and on its reputation rather than the current experience. Our room had worn furniture, an uncomfortable bed, poor soundproofing, old carpet, and dated decor. The bathroom was cramped, the bathrobes were grey and shabby, and the towels were stained. Housekeeping was superficial, with dust on furniture, marks on the carpet, and towels that didn't feel properly clean. Public areas also seemed neglected: rusty spots in the pool showers and bar, dirty glasses, and tables left uncleared. There are only two restaurants on site, both using the same kitchen, and the menus are limited. Over the stay, full lunch and dinner options were practically absent. The food was inconsistent, with odd flavors, products that didn't always seem fresh, and sometimes dirty glasses. La Carte Postale was especially disappointing, with greasy tables without tablecloths, dirty chairs, a meager menu, and unappealing dishes. Staff there barely spoke English, seemed inattentive to guests who weren't French-speaking, and struggled to explain ingredients. At La Carte Postale and Le Bar Lounge, service was far from 5★: staff were inattentive and sometimes rude, especially toward foreign guests. Orders took a long time, complaints were ignored, and no compensation was offered. The nearest decent restaurants are in Porticcio, about a 30-minute walk or drive away. Corporate parties at La Carte Postale and Le Bar Lounge were frequent and loud. Paying guests (€535-700 per night) were seated in a small, stuffy corner behind curtains, which made us feel like second-class visitors. Staff didn't apologize or offer another option. The hotel also felt focused mainly on French and corporate clients, with international guests often met with coldness, minimal help, and a very formal attitude. The private beach is small, windless, and stuffy. The nearest proper beach and the town of Porticcio are about a 30-minute walk away. The spa is gloomy, like a basement, with low ceilings and outdated equipment. Planes fly low and loudly near the airport, making it hard to relax. A request for a lunch box before an early departure was ignored. Instead, we got paper cups of tea and juice that spilled, plus two small croissants. The hotel also never contacted us about a beach tent we had forgotten, which felt careless. The hotel later acknowledged the problems and offered 25,000 ALL points plus a Gold status upgrade as a goodwill gesture. But the points can only be used within the Accor program, and there are very few Accor hotels in Corsica, so the compensation is practically useless. That acknowledgment only confirms how far the guest experience fell below Sofitel’s 5★ standards.

The sea views and sound of the waves made the location at Sofitel Ajaccio feel special, and the grounds were beautifully kept. We loved the pontoon for sunbathing and swimming, and the beach was pleasant too. The hotel was very dog-friendly, even allowing our little pooch on the beach. We also played tennis, though the court needs leveling. A massage by the sea was amazing, if pricey, and taking a jetski from the pontoon was a great touch. There are several things that would make me think twice before returning. The rooms need updating: the old, visibly worn carpet doesn't feel hygienic or right for a seaside 5-star resort in 2025. Hardwood or tile would be more suitable. The bathrooms also feel dated, with no overhead rainfall shower, just a handheld shower over the bathtub, which isn't what I expect from Sofitel. We stayed eight days, and although the food was tasty, the two restaurants share a kitchen and the choices felt like repeats of the same five or six dishes. More variety would improve things. I'd also like more non-Corsican wines by the glass, since I wasn't a fan of the local production. Drinks were pricey for the island, at 8 EUR for coffee and 16 for Aperol. The restaurant hostess was disappointing. On three occasions, we were refused a table as hotel guests while non-residents were seated. A hotel like this should prioritize its own guests. Seating each party also often took 5-7 minutes, which felt disorganized and inefficient. She needs more support or should be replaced by someone more energetic and focused on guests. I do want to come back, but these issues need attention.

Service and food could use some work. Still, the location is superb, with large, well-maintained grounds and a sea view that really delivers. The place has an old bourgeois feel and is showing its age, like staying in a rich aunt's apartment renovated in 1986 and never touched since, while she still calls it new. I'd recommend a few days here for the setting and a glimpse of past glories.
