Hotel De La Plage

We never got to try the seafood because we left before ordering. We had reserved a window table for the sea view, but the woman serving as waiter and host said we couldn’t sit there, pointing us toward another table without even looking at us. From the moment we arrived, there wasn’t a hello. She spoke with her back to us in a strict, schoolteacher sort of tone, and we later heard her talking about us to other customers as we left. The service felt nonexistent and the attitude made us want to leave and never return. We’d booked hoping for a nice evening. If someone doesn’t like the work, they should change their attitude or their job. Better to drive a few more kilometers to Dieppe for food and service than be treated like punished children.

We had to wait outside for an hour because the hotel was closed when we arrived. Once inside, the stairs to the rooms were very narrow, dark, and dirty, and there was no hotel parking. The rooms were old and dirty, the toilet window didn’t work, the internet was very weak, and the staff were rude and unfriendly. Breakfast was a joke, like camping, and the reception smelled of fish. Whenever we asked the receptionist something, she’d just answer, “Ah Bon?!!!!!” Ridiculous. This was my worst hotel experience so far.

I ordered the turbot, the most expensive dish on the menu that evening, but canceled it straight away after the way the waitress treated me. There was an empty table for two by the window, overlooking the sea. I assumed it was reserved when she said I couldn’t sit there, but then she removed the cutlery and explained it had to be set for breakfast. I’ve traveled all over France and usually been welcomed warmly. This young woman embarrassed me, and her young colleague backed her up about setting the table for breakfast. I’ve never been treated so rudely. I’m sure the boss is happy to have lost 40/50 euros.

We had a room with a sea view, and the rooms and bathrooms were all new. The staff were nice, and the guys behind the bar were friendly, capable, and spoke English. Proper beers, though, were missing, which was really sad. If beer isn’t your thing, it’s a great place to stay.
