Mercure Rennes Centre Gare

The staff were friendly and helpful, and the hotel is not far from the train station. We had a large room and a wide breakfast selection. I still didn't enjoy the stay much because all the room and breakfast problems added up. There was a small window, a big stain on the back of the curtain, a scratched toilet seat, worn bathroom tiles, a safe that didn't work, and a soap dispenser that fell off overnight. At breakfast I found a dead fly by the cheese, the first orange I picked for the juice machine was moldy, and some glasses near the machine were dirty. Nothing looked very fresh, especially the scrambled eggs and pancakes. Any one of these wouldn't have been a problem on its own, but together they made the place fall short of other four-star hotels. I highly recommend the same brand's hotel in Brest, where the breakfast setup was similar but everything was fresh, modern, and clean. Management should invest in this property.

The public areas, including reception and the conference rooms, were pristine. My room was clean, but still a real disappointment for a four-star hotel and badly in need of refurbishment. The bathroom tiles needed regrouting, paintwork had obvious patch-ups, and both the carpet and furniture were old. Breakfast was basic, and food wasn't replenished when it ran low.

This was just a stop on the way to St Malo, and it did the job. The staff tried quite hard, but the place felt purely functional, without much charm. The shopping area next door was noisy at night, and there isn't hotel parking. They have an arrangement with the local underground public car park, about a seven-minute walk away. It didn't feel like good value.

The room was super cozy, even if it wasn't as luxurious as the hotel's overall atmosphere. The bathtub was okay, and they left free bottles of water and great tea in the room. The location was okay and fairly close to the train station, though there's a slight slope along the way. It may be uncomfortable on foot with heavy luggage.
