The restaurant was the low point of our anniversary stay. I’d emailed ahead to ask for a nice table, and they promised us the best one and an unforgettable evening. We ended up outside on the terrace, where nobody seemed to know we were coming or that it was our anniversary. The service felt arrogantly French, the food was mediocre, and after a long day travelling it was a really disappointing end. Breakfast the next morning was a basic self-service continental buffet, nothing special. We’d booked a deluxe room with a balcony, though there wasn’t much deluxe about it. The mattress was the best part. The shower was very dark, and the toilet seat was loose, practically just resting on the porcelain. When we reported it, reception apologized and said they’d fix it the next day, after we’d left. They didn’t offer any compensation or goodwill gesture. We arrived around 3:30 p.m. to locked doors and a dark reception, with no sign saying when it would reopen. We were exhausted from the drive and just wanted to get into our room. Someone who seemed to work there eventually told us reception would open at 4. When a staff member finally appeared, they bluntly told us the opening hours were all over the emails they’d sent me. Not a great start. We’d booked one night on the way from the UK to Italy and hoped for a romantic dinner and a special anniversary, since travelling all day wasn’t exactly romantic.
