The food was delicious, but the atmosphere felt cold and unhelpful. We were having an incredibly hard time finding a taxi back to our broken-down car, and got nothing but disdain and dirty looks from the restaurant and its customers. One waiter was kind enough to offer napkins for me and my crying one-year-old. If you want even a little humanity while travelling, I’d avoid this place.

We found Le Chic O Rail while looking for somewhere to eat on a Monday evening in lovely Saint-Omer, right across from the magnificent station. The terrace was full, so we sat in the spacious dining room instead. It was comfortable, the decor was tasteful, and we got a warm, friendly welcome. The food and service were excellent. We’ll be back, and I’d definitely recommend it.

The restaurant was full and very noisy. The staff were friendly, and it’s had good feedback, but it didn’t feel very Chic to me. The food tasted good, though some elements seemed to be missing, perhaps because of seasonal changes or availability, or they may simply have been left out. When the beer I ordered wasn’t available, they quickly offered another one, which was spot on. The upsell for the non-tapas tapas, and the missing bits from our main courses, were less welcome.

The railway station is right outside, and the city centre is an easy walk away. There’s also free parking. The town itself is the most charming little French town. The hotel is in a stylish, well-kept old building with a cosy room. Self check-in was easy when staff weren’t around, and the continental breakfast was good quality. Highly recommend it if you’re planning to visit St. Omer.
