Camping Le Sous Bois

The description wasn't completely representative, though the site is still well run, very clean, and friendly. The pitches are generously sized, with easy access to the sea and to mostly well signposted cycle tracks. I was impressed by how much they recycle, from cardboard and corks to glass and mussel shells. Well done.

The port is a lovely spot, with some great places to eat, and we're hoping to return. We visited in June, so it was fairly quiet, and the staff were lovely. We shared a few jokes with the girls. Toilet and shower blocks were being upgraded, so the workmen needed to move around and one half was closed on some days, but there were no issues, the work had to be done. There's a bakery and a pizza bar across the road, and walking left gets you to the beach by an old German fortification, with some great sunsets. The beaches on this side aren't fantastic: there's a bit of sand at the top, but mostly rock plateaus. This was our first trip to the island, and this campsite was a gem. I won't praise it too much and spoil the ambience. Its name means 'under the wood'; there are lots of trees, some mature ones, and the trees around the pitches feel just right. There was plenty of sunshine, too.

We were here in September and found the site relaxed, with a very friendly reception. From our pitch the beach was no more than five minutes away through the municipal site across the road, which closed on 2 September. It's easy to walk or cycle into town and the shops, and there's a bus route and direct access to the island's cycle routes. The bar and pizza place at the entrance are good. We were happy with the facilities, including the strong disabled access, dedicated toilets and showers, laundry sinks, and dishwashing sinks.

At the end of September 2020 the site was quiet and laid-back. Town is easy to reach on foot or by bike, with plenty of places to eat and drink and a small produce market in the mornings. About half the site is rental mobile homes and half camping pitches. That week there were perhaps a dozen motorhomes or caravans and one tent. The facilities are old but clean, and there are recycling points for everything, even wine corks.
