The surroundings were peaceful and beautiful, with lovely nearby places to explore. We especially enjoyed the heated pool, which was great even in September when the weather can be unpredictable, and the tennis court was fun whether you're playing seriously or just with the family. We stayed last September at Résidence du Château de Salles, and the houses were comfortable and had everything we needed to switch off and enjoy our time there. You could tell a lot of thought had gone into making guests feel at home. I'd absolutely recommend it for the pool, sports facilities, lovely houses, beautiful nature, and great location. We'd love to return.
Before I had even moved into the house, I was charged an extra €270 for bedding and cleaning, which are usually included in a hotel stay. Then there was another €60 for bath towels. That's absurd, since I could buy my own for that price. I definitely wouldn't recommend this place. A hotel would be a better choice, without these extra charges before check-in, and for that price you could stay in a 5-star hotel. Don't tell me these fees were normal and expected. When you make the booking online, everything has already gone through. I'm attaching a photo as proof. These were extra costs with no reason, and I had to pay them!
Salles is a lovely French town, but I wouldn't suggest staying here. The houses vary a lot in comfort and upkeep, and the whole park feels like it missed its chance to move into the 21st century. The potential is there, but it needs work and some investment, France Comfort!
We managed to enjoy parts of the trip, especially having three conveniently placed villas where the young children could run between the houses. Our own villa was lovely and well equipped, and the beds were comfortable. But the lack of a restaurant, untidy grounds, distance to the beaches, and resort price mean we won't book again. We came home disappointed and won't return. We first visited Chateau de Salles in August 2019. The houses were basic but comfortable, and the outdoor furniture was old then and needed replacing. We liked the resort enough to plan a big family holiday there this year. Only shortly before leaving did we find out the on-site restaurant would be closed for the season. Nobody told us when we booked, and I think they should have made that clear. It was a major letdown. To us, the restaurant was the heart of the complex. On our last trip, the restaurant and pool bar had a lovely holiday buzz day and night and felt like a very social place to spend time. When we arrived this year, our eldest daughter said it looked like a ghost town. I felt the same. The tables and chairs outside the restaurant were still there, though many looked ready for replacement. Some planters were falling apart, the olive trees looked unkempt, and the pool bar area was messy. An old, tatty tarpaulin covered stacked, unused bar stools and tables. We think those should have been moved, since they really spoiled the approach to the pool. The pool itself was fine. Staff had opened a timber shed selling drinks and snacks, but it only opened in the late afternoon and shut early, at 9pm. The staff were friendly, though I feel they could have done more to make up for the restaurant being closed. There were a few entertainment nights, which were okay, but the staff didn't clear up fully afterwards and litter was still visible the next day. The grounds weren't as well kept as they were in 2019, with lots of dead leaves and grass that needed cutting. Salles itself is a sleepy village with little going on, and the beaches are at least an hour from the complex. Traffic was very busy this year. In 2019 the beaches took 40 minutes to reach, so the longer drive was frustrating. Forget about visiting the Dune de Pilat unless you're there first, the queues are horrendous. My advice to the staff and France Comfort: 1. Reopen the restaurant and pool bar areas. 2. Take better care of the grounds. 3. Clear the litter promptly after evening events. 4. Don't charge guests extra for towels. 5. Don't charge guests to use the tennis courts.
The children had a good time, and the accommodation was good and clean. The area and lakes are fabulous, but the site itself is looking tired and needs some care. It seems like the website pictures were taken in better days. We didn't eat at the restaurant, so I can't comment on it. I wouldn't come back.
