The staff were really nice and helpful, and the campsite itself is pleasant. It is a little noisy, though, since it’s only a few hundred metres from the highway. I also found it hard to sleep in a tent when campers and caravans were parked beside the tents, because their air conditioning was noisy. Smoking was another problem. Most people at the camp didn’t smoke, but the few who did sometimes smoked even at night, and the smell was awful. In France and Italy it seems people can smoke almost anywhere, even in restaurants. I hope that changes, and perhaps the camp could start by setting aside a smoking area away from where people sleep.

The shady terrace was lovely, and the layout of the site worked well. We spent a week in a reasonably priced budget mobile home among the pine trees. It was comfortable and good value, though there are a few easy ways it could be improved. We were caught out on the first night because we couldn’t light the gas, so bring matches or a lighter. A kettle would also have been handy. Some dogs roamed around freely, and being slobbered on in clean clothes while having an aperitif on our own terrace wasn’t pleasant. Management should keep a closer eye on that. I was also surprised there was no sorting for rubbish, which I thought was required across Europe.

It’s a basic, clean and inexpensive campsite, with no entertainment, pool or party scene. Caravans and mobile homes would suit it well. If you’re bringing a tent, take a groundsheet or protective mat, because the ground is very hard and stony. You’ll also need some kind of vehicle, as Salses-Le-Chateau is about a five-minute drive away.

The place is beautiful and there’s plenty on offer for sports. The mosquitoes were the awful part: they were around all day and seemed to come back every few seconds to bite us. Maybe it was just the time of year.

Lovely setting, and the help we got was outstanding.
