Hostellerie du Grand Sully

The owner and daughter were a delight, and the hotel is well placed for a walk to the Chateau. The owner is also the chef and serves French dining to guests and the public in the evening. We had a nice-sized room, and the bathroom had a large soaking tub with a shower. There's parking at the rear and a pleasant covered patio off to the side, past the rooms. We were so tired from visiting chateaus that we never got to use the patio for Sequence or even a glass of wine. The town has few restaurants, mostly pizza places, and they close early. The bar was nice for a pint, but doesn't serve food, so check the Hotel menu. If it suits you, join them at 7:30pm. Breakfast was mostly breads and pastries, with coffee or tea, orange juice and yogurt. The French love bread, and my stomach is feeling the effects of eating like them. One thing to know: the stairs to every floor are narrow and spiral. We chose the first level because my wife couldn't manage two flights.

The rooms were spacious, comfortable and spotlessly clean, with nice decor. Carpeted floors were a rare treat in France, and the bed had blankets instead of the usual quilt, making it easier to control your temperature. This hard-working family business has earned its good reputation and many awards. The meals were exceptional. Our plates were well balanced, and some unusual combinations of flavours and textures made them memorable and well worth another visit. Breakfast was just as pleasant.

My wife and I stopped at the Grand Sully on 30 August while breaking our drive from the south to Calais. The demi-pension menu gave us excellent food, and breakfast was really good too. Our room was clean, tidy and well equipped. Highly recommended.

A lovely town, and the room worked well for three people. Breakfast was generous with delicious bread and pastries.
