Gite du Ruisseau de la Renne

We booked a week in August 23 for five people through Booking.com, at €1,000 for the week. Parking was easy, there were amenities for eating outdoors, and the place wasn’t overlooked. Those were the positives. The listing gave no warning that the house sits between a railway and a busy departmental road used by heavy goods vehicles, so the noise was constant. The gardener also came to mow the lawn at 9 a.m. Upstairs was stifling, but opening the windows was forbidden. The downstairs bedroom had no door, just a curtain between it and the kitchen and living room. The living area was only the space under the stairs, with a three-seat sofa that wasn’t suitable for more guests. There were no locks on the toilet or bathroom doors, and the inside staircase was unusual. The bathroom drains were sealed and hadn’t been cleaned. The shower overflowed for two days after we arrived. The old BBQ was dangerous and needed replacing, and a faulty bed collapsed while we were sleeping on the fourth night. The landlady was unpleasant and condescending, seemed convinced she was renting a palace, and blamed past and present tenants for the faults. I expect the response to this review will show that too. There was no compensation for what we had to put up with, and no refund for the night we lost. What looked like an idyllic week on paper turned into a nightmare, and we eventually cut the stay short because we couldn’t count on having a bed.
