Gîte Maury

We had a seven-hour drive, including an hour in traffic, and paid for a full tank of gas and tolls. When we were told to leave, we had to pay the tolls again to drive home that same evening, and received no refund. The owner and his wife showed no empathy at all. They ruined our vacation. I went on holiday here with my family after the listing made the gîte look like paradise. The reality quickly disappointed us. The place wasn’t as idyllic as advertised, and a lot of things were missing. The owners’ daughter, rather than the owners, greeted us. When we asked about what was missing, they arrived looking annoyed. The contract said the pool was shared with the owners, but we were surprised to see other people using it too. Given my health problems and the COVID-19 situation, we asked for a small compromise because there weren’t really hygiene rules in place. The owner told us to leave. We first thought he was joking, but he insisted, slammed the door in our faces, and told us again to go. They don’t listen or care about their guests’ well-being. I absolutely don’t recommend this gîte and advise people to avoid it, or they may be disappointed like we were.

We booked Myriam and Michel’s gîte at the last minute and ended up extending our 10-day stay by another week. We were so sad to leave. The gîtes we tried, two different ones, were perfect, peaceful and serene. The place has the feel of a little medieval town, with a huge shared pool; each guest gets their own sun lounger and mattress. Our hosts were kind, down-to-earth and genuine, always welcoming and ready to help from start to finish. We felt right at home and are so glad we met them. We only want to come back. We paid €750, which felt completely unjustified. There was no internet, no check-in inventory, no rental agreement, and nobody to say goodbye when we left. The two single beds had been pushed together, as with our children’s beds, and the children had to pass through our bedroom to get to the bathroom. We looked at the other two rentals: one was more comfortable, with two bathrooms and two proper bedrooms, but its appliances needed replacing; the other was smaller and lacked comfort. For value, this was zero. The pool looked inviting, but its furniture was flimsy and repaired. The terrace was lovely, but apparently reserved for the owner. If he’d told us that on arrival, it would have spared us his strange looks when he found us there in the evening with the other two families. We felt watched all the time. He seemed unable to believe that strangers could get along. That was the one good part of the stay, along with barbecues and midnight swims with the other guests, and some good times with the estate’s security guards. The website made the place sound idyllic, but there was barely a welcome. The owner just went on rambling about his life. The fridge was broken, so we waited for a replacement; the coffee maker hadn’t been descaled, and the other appliances were outdated. He really needs to rethink his approach to hospitality.

For the second year in a row, we spent two very pleasant weeks at Michel and Myriam’s. We enjoyed our spacious cottage, the large pool, the peace and quiet, and how kind our hosts were.
