The coffee at breakfast was lukewarm, and the continental spread was simple. Parking is in a public lot down a very steep road, which could be a problem in icy or snowy weather. After our six-hour drive, reception was closed when we arrived. The room felt dated, though the bed was comfortable and the white linen crisp; the bathroom was cleaner and more modern. Dinner felt fussy too: the restaurant looked old-fashioned, the menu overcomplicated, and the entree choices were gizzards, frogs' legs, or snails, so I skipped it. The owner was very good, but I think the place would benefit from simpler food and less fussy tablecloths.

The view over historic Thiers from the room was lovely. I stayed August 26-27 and had one room with a TV and a big bed for two, plus another room with bunk beds. There was a restaurant serving breakfast, but I didn't eat there. I went instead to Boulangerie Artault, the closest bakery, at 2 Rue François Mitterrand. It's a great hotel, and I'd recommend it for a night or a longer stay in this beautiful old French city.

We tried dinner at the hotel restaurant and were pleasantly surprised by how good the meal was. We really enjoyed it. The room was also very comfortable for our one-night stay.
