The breakfast in the garden was a lovely way to begin each day, and our host even helped us plan outings to nearby attractions after telling us about the castle’s history. My wife and I spent three weeks touring Europe, and this 12th-century castle in Vedène was the highlight. It sits on a hill above the village, with beautiful views, and feels like a living piece of history. The owner is an antique dealer with excellent taste; he opened the castle to guests around 2010 while keeping its old character and adding modern comforts. Our tower room was full of beautiful antiques and had a romantic, genuinely old-world feel. It was also very comfortable, with excellent air conditioning. We’ve traveled a lot, and we’ve never stayed anywhere more remarkable. If you love castles, this is a must-stay.

We had a beautiful, peaceful view from the courtyard and common area. Breakfast was included, and there was enough of it. Robert was helpful too, suggesting Arles, Nimes, and Saint Remy for day trips. We didn’t spend much time exploring Vedene itself, since we wanted to see other places. This was back in fall 2012, when three of us girlfriends decided an old castle would be an interesting place to stay. We had the turret room, which was comfortable. It had two toilets, which helped, and a lovely tub with a sprayer, though no shower. Getting ready in the morning took some maneuvering when we didn’t have time for a bath. The level below didn’t have the garden and benches yet. It was hard to find, and mobile data roaming was too expensive then, so we called Robert when we got close and he gave us directions. Those were wonderful times.

Vedene's old streets winding up and down around the castle are lovely, and the whole town centre has loads of charm. I couldn't find a way into the little castle, but the area around it was very nice to see. Go up for the panoramic view over Vedene. The castle itself is beautiful, but tiny!

The view was pleasant, but this place just didn’t work for us. The living room was very small, dark, and stuffy, with no windows apart from the front door and hardly anywhere to sit. Parking was difficult to get into, and the photos didn’t make it easy to judge what it would be like. We were so disappointed that we left before spending the night, even though we’d paid for it. Not our style at all.

We found it very cold in February, so if you want to eat breakfast outside, book for a warmer spring day and bring a thick jacket. The terrace view is superb, and the breakfast is generous. This unique room in a Provençal castle in Vedène has period furniture and a real sense of stepping back in time. The hosts love history and are happy to talk about the castle and region. If you’re into history, go, you won’t be disappointed.
