Camping Le Bontemps

The staff were really friendly, and the kids had lots of fun. The pool and slides were great, with playgrounds and other sports options too. It’s a charming campsite by a river, and there’s also a fishing lake nearby. We enjoyed our stay.

The restaurant was the surprise of the stay. It looked abandoned, with a renovation half finished, so we nearly didn’t eat there, but the food was spectacular. The Piece du Boucher was the best steak we had during our time in France, and the waiter and barman who served us was brilliant. Five stars for the food. The rest of the site needs proper management. The showers and toilets stayed filthy, and facilities were poorly maintained, often half repaired or left broken. The covered pool wasn’t very clean, doors were hanging off and swinging in the wind, and the pool toilets were disgusting. The chemical waste disposal had broken pipes, the electric hookup had broken fuse covers, and the crazy golf was in such disrepair it was barely usable. For touring motorhomes, campervans, or caravans relying on the site facilities, I’d give it one star. The staff were exceptional, though. They went out of their way to help, were very polite, and put up with my bad French. It’s a great location, which makes the state of the site all the more of a shame.

One night was enough for us. Our caravan pitch was right at the far end, on a slope, which made maneuvering the caravan difficult. The nearby shower blocks were closed, so we had to walk to the other side of the campsite for toilets and showers. There were no toilet seats, the roll holders were coming off the walls, and cleanliness was poor. We asked to move to a transit pitch and were willing to pay extra, but they refused. Reception staff were impolite and unprofessional, and the customer service was bad. I wouldn’t stay here again. Even one star feels generous.

The setting is lovely, with lots of space in a beautiful wooded area and plenty for children to do. The campsite itself seemed nice, with clean facilities, but we left disappointed because we didn’t feel welcome and had to cut our stay short. It seems poorly suited to international guests unless your French is very good. My daughter slipped on the water-slide stairs while I was supervising her and cut her chin quite badly. At reception, the language barrier meant we couldn’t get proper first aid, and no one offered help. Fortunately, they had the nearest hospital’s details written down, and we got there in 25 minutes. She needed five stitches. I strongly recommend checking the slides and pool for safety. There was also confusion over our pitch number, which had already been given to someone else, partly because of the language barrier. Reception was empty by the time we figured that out, so we took the pitch next to it. The people occupying our assigned pitch complained about us being beside them. They spoke no English, and our French isn’t fluent, so it was hard to sort out and left us feeling uncomfortable.
