L'Auberge Aux Creux des Pierres

We loved the setting when we visited in April 2025, and it still charmed us this time. The meal then was wonderful and very reasonably priced for two. This visit left us unsure about returning. The mussels were very good, but at 30 euros per person, with rice and a chocolate fondant that didn’t seem homemade, we were disappointed. The chef was so kind that we didn’t feel able to mention it, though he may have been a bit too present, staying at our table for the whole meal. He also insisted we pay by credit card and wouldn’t let us cover part of the bill in cash. It’s a shame.

The setting was pleasant, but the meal was a letdown, especially at €27. Everything came boiled and without sauce. The lentils and rice were cold and unseasoned, and the guinea fowl leg was boiled too. The fromage blanc hadn’t curdled, while the crème brûlée was inedible, just plain, unsweetened cream that was barely cooked. They set the tone as soon as we entered the dining room by saying, “we don’t have any fruit juice.” At payment, the owner wouldn’t allow commas on the check. Pathetic.

The fireplace and good food were especially welcome when we arrived in December for a work trip in the cold and snow. We were very well received, and the owner was attentive and pleasant. When he noticed our work clothes were damp, he suggested we leave them by the fireplace overnight so they’d be dry and warm the next day. We’re going back at the end of March, which makes the trip a little more pleasant. You can go there with your eyes closed.

We had a lovely group lunch in a magnificent rural setting, with a warm welcome. The fireplace made the experience especially pleasant. The fresh, local ingredients were simply but nicely prepared, and everything was homemade.
