The Ship wasn’t anything like the place I remembered from 20 years ago. We’d planned a Sunday visit to Aberdaron during a long weekend in Abersoch, with four adults including my 92-year-old mum. Two weeks ahead, I emailed to book Sunday lunch and got a reply from Alun saying it was confirmed. We arrived for our 1pm booking, had a look around, then went to the pub. The bar was unappealing, with just one person serving, and she had no idea about the booking. There was no restaurant or dining area anymore, and no Sunday lunch. An off-duty staff member at the end of the bar apologised when I showed her the confirmation, and said she didn’t know why I’d been sent it. They gave us the menu they use when meals are available, then squeezed all four of us around a table next to the pool table. I was flabbergasted. We decided we could do much better at the restaurant two minutes away and left. It was truly awful, and I have no idea why they confirmed the booking. Never again.

The service was attentive and welcoming, and the surroundings were very nice. The Sunday lunch was sublime: freshly cooked with quality ingredients, generous portions and very good value. We shared a delicious rhubarb and apple crumble with custard because we couldn’t manage one each. There’s a good selection of beers and wines, also at good prices. Sadly, we don’t live nearby, or we’d be here every Sunday.

There were lots of locals, which is good for The Ship, but the service was poor. The three women behind the bar saw us waiting and kept chatting instead of serving us. This was two weeks ago, at the beginning of April, not on a weekend. I’m only posting now because Google prompted me. Thanks to the owner for replying.

A brilliant hotel and an amazing breakfast. I can’t wait to come back.

We had a lovely Sunday dinner at The Ship Hotel. The food, service and atmosphere all impressed us. We’ll certainly return to this jewel on the Llŷn.
