The staff were friendly and helpful throughout, and breakfast was good quality, freshly cooked just how we liked it. Our room was clean and roomy, warmed up easily, and the bathroom's heated rack did a lovely job with the towels. They clearly put effort into keeping guests comfortable. We were there for Hogmanay. It's about a five minute drive to the train station, then roughly 20 minutes straight to Waverley and Edinburgh city centre. We had to drive on Hogmanay itself because trains stopped around 8pm. The place is remote, though there are lovely countryside walks to explore, plus North Berwick and plenty of golf courses. We were told to expect buffet breakfast on New Year's Day, so the earlier complaint about that seems easy to disregard, especially as not many people get up at 7am that day. Still, breakfast could run later. A 9:30am cutoff feels early when visitors can order breakfast until 11am.

The lodge itself is beautiful and ideally located for the three courses we played, each just a short 20 minute drive away. We weren't able to fit its own golf course into this trip, but that's on the list for next time. The rooms felt new and spacious, the food was very good, and service was exceptional. We found The Lodge of Cragielaw while looking for a place along Scotland's Golf Coast, and it turned out to be a great find. The management team were especially friendly and professional, and took a real interest in making sure our needs were met. We'd certainly recommend it.

The night porter and barman gave us a wonderful welcome when we arrived after midnight on Hogmanay. They were so helpful and couldn't do enough for us. The next morning was a completely different experience. I've never had worse breakfast or service at a hotel. No one came to serve us, so I had to approach staff myself. They seemed focused on clearing up and looking around rather than waiting on guests. I still don't know if freshly cooked breakfast was available. There were no menus, and some people appeared to have different food. What was out looked like a buffet: milk cartons in a fridge rather than jugs, dark stewed Cona coffee, thick tough pre-cooked eggs, tinned mushrooms sitting in watery liquid, pale undercooked sausages, and tatty scones baked so hard they were like crisps. The bread slices were so thin they were nearly transparent. Surely a decent loaf is possible? I've stayed here before, and breakfast was underwhelming then too. This time, both the service and food quality were below even youth hostel standards. At £144 a night, we deserved at least something mediocre.

We were glad we chose to stay here instead of central Edinburgh. The train from Wallyford, about a 15 minute drive to the park & ride, takes only 10 minutes to reach Waverley and costs £5.10 return. For a fraction of what Edinburgh hotels charged, this was superb value for money. We had a brilliant four night stay. Every staff member we met was friendly, polite and helpful, and our room was very clean and had all we needed. Breakfast was good, but the evening meal was exceptional. We'd highly recommend staying here.

The location is beautiful, with stunning views, and I'd happily stay again. I stayed overnight and had a wonderful time. Reception welcomed me warmly, my room was clean and comfortable with everything I needed, and dinner was lovely with great service and fair prices. There was plenty to choose from at breakfast too.
