The Railway Inn

We stayed overnight with 18 friends. The real ales were good, the restaurant served wholesome food, and the room was cosy with a comfy bed. Breakfast portions were huge, and the bar dog was cool.

This was our second stay for an event in Abingdon, but the service had gone downhill. The owner was rude and not the sort of welcome I'd expect from a landlady or hotelier. She made my guests and me feel unwelcome. The bed was clean, but the shower left a lot to be desired. I have a photo of a wipe along the shower ridge. The pizza on our first night was cold in the middle. We definitely won't stay here again.

The owner was extremely rude throughout my stay. I believe she tried to take more than the agreed payment: she said two card transactions hadn't gone through, then the third attempt succeeded. She kept talking to herself the whole time. Once she had charged the right amount, what my company had allocated, I heard her say, “I guess we both lose out.” I was also told I couldn't leave the building and should go to bed, despite not having eaten all day or had a cigarette. I'd been unable to stop on the way in because I was worried about losing my room. I called ahead to say I'd be 30 minutes late for check-in, and she said I needed to hurry because she had to go to bed at 10 o'clock. Completely disgraceful. After a 12-hour shift, I can still be polite and courteous, and I believe a hospitality manager should show the same self-control instead of coming across so unprofessionally. I believe this woman should reimburse my company and give me a sincere apology. The condition I left the room in, see photo. The CCTV cameras show how much respect I had for the other hotel users. Room 7 is my favourite, and the rooms are great. Pauline, the owner, is friendly, welcoming and always up for a chat. You can tick what you want for breakfast, and it’s amazing. The beer is fantastic, the location is great, and the locals make you feel welcome too. Probably one of the best B&Bs in the country. 100% recommend, what more could you ask for?
