We keep making the trip from Newcastle for fish and chips from Hope and Anchor, then eating them at the beach. I’m coeliac, so having a gluten-free takeaway option is a real blessing. The fish is lovely and meaty, and the batter is the best I’ve had, even compared with regular batter. The chips are more like restaurant-style triple-cooked ones, and my husband, who isn’t GF, agrees these are the best. We went today with my 91-year-old mother, and they were just as good. I phoned the order in at 12:30 for 1pm collection, and it was ready on time. Well done, Hope and Anchor. The sun was even shining!

The takeaway arrived really fast, and the service was friendly, so no complaints there. It was pricey, though I expected that. Sadly, the fish had no flavour and the chips were brown, as if overcooked or fried in old oil. A waste of calories, really. Such a shame, my wife is crying now.

We tried a mix of dishes, including seafood chowder, pizza and fish and chips, and had a fantastic meal. Of the pubs and restaurants we’ve eaten at in Alnmouth, this was the best. It’s very family friendly, dogs included, and we’d definitely return to Hope and Anchor.

We went as four last night and everyone enjoyed their food. Our order was a real mix, whitebait, pizza, fish and chips, and curry, and every dish was first class. The fish and chips stood out, with a gigantic piece of fish, hot crispy batter, heaps of homemade chips and great mushy peas. Great food, friendly staff and good value. Highly recommend.

That was one of the worst takeaway meals I can remember. The fish and chips were mostly batter with very little fish, and the chips were greasy. The chicken goujons looked as if they’d come from Tesco’s frozen aisle. We were really disappointed, especially as this was our last meal of the holiday week. The pizza and pasta we’d had in the restaurant earlier in the week were much nicer, which is why I’ve given two stars instead of one.
