We started with a couple of drinks at the bar before dinner, and the ales were well kept, with a solid regular selection and some nice guest beers. The building has loads of character and history in its structure. I had the steak and mushroom pie with chips, while my wife chose lasagna and garlic bread. Both were delicious, proper hearty pub food. Everyone working there was really friendly. It was a pleasure to visit, and the summer beer garden gives us a good reason to come back.

The service was friendly and courteous throughout our one-night stop, and the bar had a good wine list as well as a fine range of beers. We enjoyed both dinner and breakfast, with generous portions and delicious food. Our room was clean and nicely furnished, with a comfortable bed and a handy little ensuite with a shower and toilet. A memorable stay all round.

There’s a small menu, but the choices are good. We stopped for lunch before heading out to Cathedral Cavern, and the food came quickly. The staff were polite, too. Main lunches finish at 2 pm, after which lighter meals are available for walkers passing through. We had a very enjoyable visit and would definitely recommend a stop here.

After a walk we came in for drinks, then returned for dinner. The beer was kept just right, with a good choice of local brews, and the food was lovely, made from a simple local menu. It’s a charming traditional inn in beautiful Elterwater, and the staff were friendly and efficient. Book ahead for dinner, as it gets popular.

The rooms are fine for an old building, and breakfast is amazing, though after a few days you might only fancy a small one. It’s a dog-friendly, old-fashioned pub with warm fires and log burners. The beer is great, if a bit pricey for the middle of the Lake District. After a walk, sitting outdoors admiring the tree is lovely in spring, summer or autumn. In winter, I’d probably rather be inside.
