The pub is in a lovely setting and is well designed, which makes the change since my visit over a year ago all the more disappointing. I’d remembered good food, excellent service and a welcoming smile. This time, being a customer seemed like an unwelcome distraction. I was met with a sigh and grimace, then eventually served the only real ale available, despite four pumps being displayed. The food was bland and about what you’d expect from a motorway cafe. Shepherd Neame, get things together and find staff who suit the pub and treat customers with the respect they deserve.

For years I’ve loved the Flying horse Pub in Wye. The food has consistently been beyond belief, and service has usually been brilliant. When my first puppy was young and hard to train, I came in to see how dog-friendly the pub was. Staff were tolerant, kind, offered treats and genuinely helped while we trained him. He’s now excellent in restaurants, and I’ve always remembered that. I’ve recommended the pub to countless people and returned many times. Today was my first disappointing visit in years. We brought a new 14-week-old puppy. Other dogs were barking, which set ours off briefly, but we were actively training, calming and managing him. A new manager I hadn’t met before, Jess, spoke to us abruptly and dismissively. The manner was completely unacceptable, frankly diabolical, and the worst service I’ve had here. It didn’t fit the welcoming, dog-friendly spirit I’ve known the pub for. I’d still highly recommend the Flying Pub in Wye for its food, atmosphere and long-standing staff, but after today I can’t recommend the service from Jess.

I’ve been in several times over the last couple of months for food and drinks, and want to praise Evie, Eleanor and Laila. They’ve always been friendly, polite and professional, and the service I’ve had from them deserves five stars every time. They’re valuable to the business. The quirky art and decorative pieces around the pub make it stand out, as do the classy amuse bouches before sit-down meals. I also love that dogs are welcome, so I can bring mine if I choose. Those details keep people talking and coming back, myself included. I’ve been involved with the local community in Wye for a long time, and I’m pleased to leave this review for the Fly as a satisfied member of the public.

Bring back the old owners and staff! We went today for a birthday meal and had visited many times before the new owners came in. The menu had far fewer options than we expected, and the allergy-friendly food was shocking. My meal looked and tasted like it came from a local corner fast-food shop, and my husband’s fish was cooked to death. They should stick to being a pub.

SHAMBOLIC!!!! I’ve been coming here for a few years and used to be welcomed with a smile and good hospitality every time. That’s changed. Elenor, a lovely host, offered us drinks to start, though there usually used to be water on the table and now there isn’t. We ordered food, which Jess brought over. She was so rude it made the visit unpleasant. When my friend asked for ketchup, Jess sighed and reluctantly agreed, in an aggressive manner. The food itself was amazing, no fault there. My partner went to the bar to ask for the bill and had to wait about 10 minutes because Elenor was busy running the bar and serving customers all by herself. When my partner asked who the manager was because she wanted to complain about Jess, it became clear that Jess was the manager. I’ll be making an official complaint to Shepherd Neame about the hosting. The pub now has such a bad atmosphere that my friends and I won’t return. Shepherd Neame should close it and get a new manager, because under this manager the pub will be falling to its knees.
