I’m local and visit the Balavoulin regularly. In summer, it’s lovely to sit outside under the huge umbrellas with a drink in the sun. The sliding glass doors along the side open the inside onto the outdoor area and let fresh air through. It can get very busy depending on the season, so book ahead if you’re coming with a larger group for dinner. The food is classic pub fare, done to a decent standard. The sharing nachos are huge and tasty. Some nights, especially when there’s a big game or live music, the Bally feels more like a pub than a dinner spot. The music can get loud enough to make conversation difficult on the pub and fireplace side, so we try for a booth. I recommend it as a dependable place we enjoy visiting, though it’s not our favourite spot.

Right by the main road, and a comfortable, clean bed made for a decent stay for the money. The bathroom was tiny, especially the sink, which made washing my face awkward. It also needs airing after a shower to stop it getting stuffy and damp. Breakfast was excellent, and all the staff were helpful and very nice, especially James. A classic, comfortable room above the pub.

The Balavoulin had a great atmosphere, with twinkly lights and a real log burner making it cosy in winter. We stopped in for a few beers, and the team were friendly and attentive. James in particular was a great guy. We shared the nachos with chilli, and the portion was massive and so tasty. Good for a meal or just to relax with a coffee or beer. Try the nachos!

The room was not especially large, but it was fine for a few nights. The bed was comfortable, the pillows very plump, and the amenities were what you’d expect. Downstairs had good food and drinks, with breakfast a particular highlight. The location worked well for walks around the village or drives into the surrounding area. Our trip to Aviemore was poorly timed: most attractions weren’t open until later in the year, and grey, drizzly weather ruled out casual hiking. The Balavoulin turned out to be a much better choice. We’re already planning a summer return to follow the helpful staff’s recommendations. James was especially keen to help.

Our second meal was a lot better, even though the place was fuller. Everyone enjoyed their different choices and was surprised by how good the food was, which made up for the first visit. The drinks arrived without any trouble that time, and we’d consider going again. We didn’t stay overnight, but had two meal bookings on consecutive visits. On the first, seven of us ordered from the main menu. Only one thought the food was outstanding, most called it good pub food and the rest weren’t keen. The Cumberland sausage meal was especially disappointing: both parsnips were unevenly cooked, one raw inside and left uneaten, and the carrots had similar issues. The other, smaller vegetables were good. We wouldn’t order that dish again. Service was okay, but our drinks never came; they were taken off the bill when we mentioned it at payment.
