Castaways Holiday Park

We left early, and only stayed as long as we did because we didn’t want to spoil the children’s holiday. The caravan was filthy and smelled awful. The bedding was badly discoloured, the microwave had rust in it, and the carpets, floor and chairs were black and clearly hadn’t had a proper clean in a long time. Other people on site said they had the same problem with their caravans. The pub staff were rude and unwelcoming, and sat drinking, which felt very unprofessional. We’d been looking forward to this break, so it was such a shame. It could be a nice place if someone put some care into it, but we wouldn’t recommend it or return.

We ended up checking out two days early. After more than four years of enjoyable stays and recommending the park to friends and family, leaving early was a difficult decision, but we couldn’t enjoy the rest of this visit after how uncomfortable and disrespected we felt. We hope this isn’t the direction the park is heading; basic kindness and respect were sorely missing this time. The trouble started with the caravan we were given. It was on uneven ground, which was difficult for my 70-year-old father, who has limited mobility. We’re usually easy-going and reluctant to complain, but we needed help. Anna at reception was kind, professional and very accommodating. The caravan was smaller than the one we’re used to, but we stayed the night and asked the next morning whether another one might be available. That’s when Richard helped us. From the moment we came in, he was dismissive, combative and unwelcoming, before we’d even had a chance to explain. His unprovoked manner was upsetting, especially with my father, who isn’t able-bodied, there with us. We felt humiliated. Later, at the on-site shop, we tried to buy shower gel and were told cards weren’t accepted for purchases under £5. There was no clear sign about this, and we’d seen someone pay by card for a smaller purchase the day before. The inconsistency added to our frustration. We’d never had an experience like this on earlier visits. For a family-run place, we expected the same courtesy, professionalism and respect we’d known as returning guests, but sadly that wasn’t our experience this time.

We woke up to a beautiful view of the ocean waves, and even in miserable winter weather it was spectacular. You don’t usually find a view like that at this price. Breakfast was delicious, too. The hotel rooms are pretty standard, but they were clean and fresh, and the staff more than made up for that. They went out of their way to make me comfortable, helping with my bags and even coming outside to guide my car in the dark. The owner met me at breakfast and had a lovely chat with me, which made me feel valued as a customer of the park. The staff really make this place feel special. Thanks for everything, we’ll be back :)

The location is stunning, right on the beach, and there are little towns a short walk or drive away. It’s a lovely small park with just one entrance and exit. Our family has been coming to Castaways for over 20 years, and we all adore the place. The staff make you feel like family, and the caravans are always clean, roomy, well equipped and amazingly priced. Anna and Richard, the owners, are truly lovely and remember us every year. I couldn’t recommend the park more.
