The Old Sawmill

We arrived on 31 December for a New Year break. The apartment was beautiful, but when we tried to cook late on New Year’s Day, the electrics kept tripping, so we couldn’t. We contacted the person we thought was the owner, the apartment manager. He apologised and said he’d come on 2 January. Early that morning, the power tripped again and set off the fridge alarm, so we told him. He rang my husband, apologised, and said he’d look at it that day. He also asked if a colleague could come in while we were out to replace a broken blind, and we agreed. When we got back late afternoon, the workmen were still there fixing it. The manager had also texted that the electrics seemed fine, though no electrician had been out. We tried the kettle and the fuse went again, leaving us unable to cook for another night. He apologised once more and said he’d contact the owner. The owner spoke to us late on 3 January and said the problem was the fusebox. When I asked about compensation, she walked off downstairs saying it was an act of God, I wouldn’t get anything from her, and I could leave a review because she didn’t care. She didn’t acknowledge that we hadn’t received what we paid for, and her response was vile.

The setting by the river is beautiful. The rooms were very clean and modern, and check-in was quick and easy. Parking was ready and available out front.

We had a fantastic three-night stay at Gatsby House. It’s luxurious, clean and well equipped, and the river is close by. The centre of Bakewell is only a short walk away. Thanks to Bryce and Richard for taking such good care of us. We’ll book again for next year.

This was my third time at Millstream Mews, and I stayed in the lovely Fiddlesticks this visit. It’s not only comfortable but truly luxurious, and incredibly clean. Richard somehow keeps the properties in tip-top shape despite guests doing all the muddy outdoor activities the area has to offer. He does it in a friendly, efficient, unobtrusive way. Bryce clearly wants everyone to have a great stay, and I’m already looking forward to coming back. The location is excellent too: quiet and private, but only a few easy, pleasant minutes on foot from Bakewell centre and all the amenities you could need.
