The staff were helpful and knew their stuff, and the room was clean and tidy. The self-catering kitchen had good facilities. But room 10 is directly over the kitchen, so you smell everyone's cooking. People there were chatting with the lights on until 12:45 am, which lit up the room. There was a hum that kept changing volume and never stopped, plus doors banging from 7pm to 1am and then again from 6am. The other guests also left the toilets and showers in a state. Sorry, but in room 10 you'd sleep better at the bus stop at the end of the road.

The cottage sits in a stunning spot right at the foot of the mountains, making it ideal for walking and climbing. There are well-equipped rooms and kitchen, with space to eat and relax. Reception also has decent beer and cider available.

We stayed in the cabin, which was spacious and warm thanks to its storage heater. There are plenty of walks starting right from this perfect location. Staff were friendly, and everywhere was clean. The fridge space was limited, probably because the hostel was busy over the school half-term. Parking is free from 5pm to 10am; daytime parking costs £6, which still feels worth it.

This quiet, peaceful YHA cottage is a beautiful base near Llyn Ogwen. You can arrive by car or public transport, with the T10 bus stop just a few minutes' walk away. The Cwm Idwal Loop begins beside the cottage, and Mt Tryfan and other mountains are there for hiking. The rooms are clean and well kept, and the large self-catering kitchen is clean and well equipped. Historically, the cottage belonged to Lord Penrhyn's Estate and served as the slate quarry manager's house.

Marc deserves a special mention for making check-in easy and sharing helpful maps and terrain advice for my hike. I was travelling solo, and the single-bed room suited me perfectly. The self-catering kitchen had everything I needed to prepare meals, and the washrooms were spotless. The team was great, communication was excellent, and my questions were answered quickly from the smooth booking onward. YHA Idwal Cottage is in an ideal location, and I highly recommend it for a stay in the area.
