Breakfast was the best we’ve had in quite a while. The freshly chopped strawberries and melon with cream were especially tasty, and the cooked breakfast was a treat too, with very tasty bacon, sausage and black pudding, mostly from local sources. Our room was much better than we expected, bright and airy, with an immaculate en-suite and a view towards Kirkcarrion, a Bronze Age monument. The firm bed was very comfortable, and the quiet meant we slept brilliantly. The house itself is immaculate and feels like home, and the welcome was warm. The owner explained the layout and showed us to our first-floor room. The wi-fi was a bit hit and miss, though that can be a positive. We only came to Gentian House because our usual place was booked, but next time we’re in Middleton in Teesdale, this will be our first choice. It was cheaper than our previous lodging, breakfast included. Thanks for the stay, we’ll certainly be back.

Mary was so friendly and helpful, and the place is a credit to her. We’ve just come back from two days at Gentian house and would happily return. Our room was spotless and comfortable, and breakfast was plentiful and just right.

A cosy, clean room with a homely feel, and it was affordable too. The morning breakfast was really good. It’s a lovely B&B, run by a lovely lady, and a great base for visiting local tourist attractions. Well recommended.

The locally sourced breakfast was generous enough for a hearty appetite, and the rooms were amazing value. Gentian house b&b is spotless throughout, with excellent decor. The lovely lady running it can’t do enough for guests. Thanks for a great two days, Phil and Valerie Boyack. I’ve just returned from a two-night stay and couldn’t rate it highly enough.

A proper hidden gem. The period property has been beautifully renovated, and my cosy room made for a good night’s sleep. Breakfast was sumptuous, and nothing was too much trouble.
