The bed was comfortable, and the pub had a decent pool table and a good range of drinks. The staff were accommodating too. But the place was in poor shape and wasn’t clean, and the rooms were extremely cramped. You also have to share a shower. If you’re a contractor needing to leave early, you have to contact someone to switch off the alarm and open the door. The doors close at 11pm, so going out after that could leave you locked out of your room. A few bright spots, but the condition really let it down.

I’d somehow avoided this place for years, and I’m not sure why. It’s a nice spot for a few beers, with a couple of real ales on tap most of the time and plenty of other drinks. The ales have picked up CAMRA awards in the past. The pub food is tasty and reasonably priced, and there’s a smoking area out back plus a little pool table beside the main bar. A pretty nice wee pub, all in.

The room was comfortable, clean and tidy, and the bar had a really relaxing feel. We stayed three nights and had a lovely, restful time. All the staff were friendly and helpful.

The Saracen has a place in my heart because my dad, rest his soul, worked behind the bar there as a second job in the sixties. It goes back to the smuggling days, as a halfway stop between the Ayrshire coast and Glasgow. Luckily for me, my flat is just 18 steps from the front door. If I’m thirsty, I can get there in five, and be home by 85 😜😃

Lovely area, and the pub is really clean and friendly. The staff are extremely nice.
