The cottage was a lovely retreat for our group of six friends, and we had a great week. It was spotless, with quirky vintage touches and soft furnishings that made it feel beautifully decorated. I even came away with a few ideas for my own home. There are great walks and beaches nearby, and The Smithy Inn is just across the road, a few steps away. We enjoyed the food and drink, and the landlord and lady were lovely. On arrival, there was a tray with scones and homemade jam, a really nice touch. We’ll be back.

We had another cosy, comfortable stay at Chapel Cottage, and the children loved the lovely walks down to the beach. There’s plenty to explore around Welcombe, and The Smithy Inn is only a few metres away and well worth a visit. Beautiful cottage and a stunning location. We’ll definitely come back.

The beach walk is a must, and the pub next door is a great choice for a meal and a pint. We spent a relaxing week here with friends, and the cottage was clean, cosy and nicely decorated. Everything about the stay was great.

The cottage looked lovely from outside, but once we got in, we found a lot of problems. We stayed for a week in August. The kitchen was dirty and really needs replacing. The ovens were dirty, the fridge had yellowed, and the glasses and cutlery needed more than a dishwasher cycle. Some glasses even had paint fingerprints on them, as if they’d been used for cleaning brushes. We didn’t want to use them, so we borrowed glasses from the pub and bought some of our own. There were brown stains on some towels. When we asked the housekeeper, she said, “don’t worry, that’s fake tan from the previous people last week.” The washing machine had mould inside, so we didn’t use it. In the lounge, the sofa felt like a see-saw and one of the wing-back chairs had a broken leg. The beds were so uncomfortable that we all woke with headaches and back aches every morning. There were swarms of flies in the house, so we couldn’t leave food out. Apparently, this was the farmer’s fault because he intensively farms his cattle down the lane and never lets them see fresh air. There are plenty of places to stay in North Devon for a great family holiday, but this wasn’t one of them.

Clean, spacious and well equipped. The Smithy Inn is good for food and a drink.
