Royal Square Hotel

The room was awful enough that we spent as much time out as possible and only came back to sleep, and even that was unpleasant. It was a small box with an uncomfortable bed, a leaking toilet, water-damaged pictures and a dirty window. The TV had sound but no picture, and the bathroom window wouldn’t open. Parking cost £7 for the night, which felt shameful. The photos didn’t look like the room we booked, and there was somewhere around the corner for half the price and a better standard. We might have raised these problems with the staff, but the man at check-in seemed unfriendly and unapproachable. It was a bad experience and we won’t stay here again. There also doesn’t seem to be any way to contact them to complain.

Breakfast cost £14.99 each and wasn’t edible. The woman serving it was very rude. The room was very small and in poor condition, with an uncomfortable bed and no opening window or air conditioning. I wouldn’t recommend this place or stay here again.

The location was good, not far from the NEC or the city, and there was enough parking. The rooms and breakfast area felt dated, though, and the baseboards were missing in the breakfast room. Our downstairs room was smaller than expected, with the mattress against one wall and a small double bed where you could feel the bottom through the mattress. We heard everything from the rooms around us, and there were strange noises in the ceiling from the heating pipes. After we complained, we were moved to a larger, cleaner room on the first floor, which we appreciated.

The staff were friendly and tried to sort things out, and it’s close to the NEC. That’s about all I can praise. My room was cramped, the walls and doors let every sound through, and the bed was so uncomfortable I could feel the mattress springs. The bedside light was broken and couldn’t be fixed, though the staff kindly brought me a temporary one since the ceiling light was far too bright for a relaxing evening. The shower drain was poor, so I stood in ankle-deep water. Breakfast was very basic: a couple of jams, no cold spreads, and instant coffee. I won’t be back.
