The Station Inn

This little place made working away feel a lot more welcoming. The rooms are great and reasonably priced, the staff are always attentive to what people need, and the locals help you feel at home. I’d recommend it if you’re in the area for work, leisure or fun.

I booked at the last minute and won’t stay here again. The room and bathroom were small, and the thin walls meant I could hear the next room’s guests being loud until the early hours. The beds were hard, the stool was torn, the bed bases were grubby, the pillows had stale blood on them, and there was mould in the shower and on the ceiling. For £45 a night, I expected at least a decent standard. The shower pressure was good, but getting my deposit back took three days and several complaints, even though they’d said it would be returned after 24 hours.

It’s a handy location, about 500 steps from the station, with a train to new street that takes less than ten minutes. The hotel’s fine, and the room was clean, if a little tired. It had what we needed for a weekend, including towels, shower soap, tea and coffee, plenty of sockets and a television. The bed and room were comfortable enough, and the staff were absolutely lovely. The walls are very thin, though, so we could hear conversations from nearby rooms and the toilets flushing.

I was in Room 44 on the 2nd of this month for work, hoping to sleep between shifts. There was no soundproofing at all, and someone downstairs had the TV blaring. My room smelled of weed, like cat wee, and I think it may have been coming from room 45. Then I was woken by loud sitar music and the sound of a woman being loudly assaulted, like an animal being slaughtered with a blunt spoon. It felt as if I were in bed right beside them. We paid £8 for a pint, and on the stairs I saw a man sitting there spitting on the floor. The place was grotty and the people were worse. I can’t recommend it. We were there to get on with work, but it was impossible. Avoid.
