The meal itself was a letdown, and when we told staff the food disappointed us, nobody apologised or tried to put things right. Our starters were poor: the garlic mushrooms were only five breaded pieces on lettuce and gave off a lot of unpleasant water. The southern fried chicken was so overcooked and hard it felt like it could break glass. After about 45 minutes, the mains arrived. They looked fine at first, but the carrots were browned and dried out, and the cauliflower cheese had become an unrecognisable puree. Service was just as frustrating. Four adults waited at the bar for a long time before anyone acknowledged us or showed us to a table. We went back to order after looking at the menu, but were told someone would come over. Nobody did, so we had to return to the bar and order ourselves. Nobody checked on us or asked if we wanted more drinks; our empty glasses and cups piled up despite the place claiming to offer table service. The Saxon Inn no longer felt like the welcoming traditional pub we remembered. The familiar decor was gone, leaving a cold, uninviting feel that matched the service. The poor service and clear drop in food quality made for a very disappointing visit compared with what The Saxon Inn used to offer.

Deb was especially kind and welcoming, and went out of her way to make us feel at home. The staff’s warmth made a real impression during our one-night stay. Our room was clean, roomy and comfortable, and felt like great value. It’s rare to come across such genuine hospitality. We’ll book here again when we’re back in the area, it’s a gem of a hotel! Sorry about the mess in the photos. I forgot to take them after the room had been cleaned and the beds made.

The Saxon Inn was a great base for our two-night walking break with three friends. The staff, food and rooms were all fantastic, and the locals made us feel welcome too. Nothing to fault. We’ll be back for another stay.

Our order had to be taken three times because three menu items weren’t available. Once we finally ordered, some food was missing or wrong when it arrived. Then they tried to charge us for five extra meals when we paid. The whole visit was a disaster, and we definitely won’t be going back.

We went for the fireworks and arrived early, so we had a drink and played a couple of games of pool. Everyone was lovely and welcoming, and we were amazed by how much the venue had spent on the display. What a night. We’ll be back because we’re keen to try the food. Thanks!
