Mayfair Hotel

We had great beds in a lovely, clean hotel in a quiet area, not far from the main centre. There was barely any staff around, though. I saw the manager on arrival and we kept in touch by text; the only other people we saw were fellow guests. Since we were out all day, it didn’t bother us much. Great value for money and I’d happily stay again.

We’d booked two rooms for a long weekend over two weeks ahead, then got an email the day before arrival saying they were cancelled, with no explanation. The refund was supposed to take 7 to 12 days. The place was still taking bookings on booking.com. I called all day to ask what had happened, but the mobile went straight to voicemail. Eventually the owner emailed to say, basically, that as a private hotel they could cancel bookings if they wanted and there was nothing I could do. Seems like something of a con, and I wish I’d read the reviews before booking. Avoid this place. It should get zero stars.

Our pooch could come along, which was great, and we had a lovely buffet breakfast in the morning. The host was extremely helpful and accommodating, and our rooms were very clean and comfortable, with tea and coffee facilities. We got back too late and were worn out, so sadly missed having a beer in the bar. We’ll definitely come back and stay again.

The Mayfair Hotel later cancelled our booking without giving a reason, leaving us scrambling to find somewhere to stay that night. I really wish we’d never seen it advertised, and I’ll now be fighting for a full refund. Nobody replied to messages. There was mould in the glasses at the bar, and a group staying there told us they had no towels or toilet paper and had waited over an hour for a breakfast that never arrived. Don’t bother going here.
