Motel Schmotel

A simple motel that works well for a short stop or a weekend. I booked at short notice and the staff welcomed me at check-in. The room was small but functional, in a quiet spot near the city centre. Brighton beach and the Palace pier are within walking distance. The bathroom was a squeeze, but you can’t have everything.

The room felt small, and my partner wasn’t keen on it. The walls need painting and have loads of cracks, while the bathroom is tiny. There was no food or drink at the hotel, and all we can say about the lighting is that there were two switches to get into the bathroom. It was okay.

Compact rooms, but spotlessly clean and stocked with the basics you need. There’s no reception, though staff are available by phone and quick to help. The location is fantastic, between the seafront and main shopping centre, and the price is very reasonable. Good value for money.

We found Brighton pretty expensive for accommodation, so Motel Schmotel is a reasonable choice if you need somewhere cheap and cheerful for a night or two. Breakfast was lovely, with a good selection. We had the full English on both days and enjoyed it. Staff were friendly and approachable, and we got a warm welcome and a quick check-in. Our room, no.7, was at the very top of the building, about four flights of stairs up, but that wasn’t much of a problem. It was small, clean and nicely presented, with tea and coffee, a small TV and a little cupboard/wardrobe. The ensuite was very cramped, especially for two larger men. It’s an old house with creaky floorboards and thin walls. We brought earplugs and had no noise issues, but without them you can hear people moving and talking in neighbouring rooms, so I’d suggest bringing some.
