The self check-in was easy and stress-free, and our room was clean and comfortable, with tea and coffee facilities and fast Wi-Fi. Number 75 is right in the middle of Brighton, so the seafront, pier and The Lanes are right outside and exploring was simple. You do hear city noise because it’s such a lively central spot, but that’s the trade-off. For the price, it’s great value if you want to be close to the beach, nightlife and attractions.

The rooms could have been cleaner, though the bathrooms were spotless. There was a TV with YouTube, the heating was quick and easy to use, and the hotel itself is in a fantastic location. It was also extremely quiet.

The Wi-Fi was very good and the location is fairly central, but we clearly chose the wrong place. There was a better room just down the road, and I wish I’d spent the extra £10. The building has a lovely exterior, but inside it felt held together with sellotape and mould. Customer service was awful, and I’d tell anyone to stay elsewhere. We couldn’t get any help when the power went out in our room. The “emergency number” on the poster connected to a security agency with nothing to do with the hotel, and when we called the number from booking.com at 3pm on a Friday, it went to voicemail and nobody picked up. Staff were nowhere to be seen. We’d also requested spare towels and tea supplies, but nobody came despite saying they would. We spent all 6 nights with one towel and had to buy things to refill the tea supplies. There was no soundproofing. We could hear neighbouring rooms word for word, including those above and below us, as well as music from a nearby pub at the back of the building. The communal showers had no locks, so I had to hold the door shut for my partner. They were mouldy, and the temperature swung between boiling and freezing. They charged me twice and argued when I raised it. The hotel wouldn’t help or even admit it had happened, so I spent a day contacting my bank to stop the second payment. I can provide evidence by email. Stay away unless they improve the staff, how they treat customers, and the rooms’ soundproofing.

We paid £162 and came away feeling misled and wanting our money back. The place was advertised as decent, but the room was filthy and unhygienic, with dust and dirt that made it seem as if it hadn’t been cleaned properly in ages. The bathroom was mouldy, the shower didn’t work, and its door wasn’t properly attached. The old TV wasn’t the flat screen shown online. There were safety and maintenance problems too. The radiator had come off the wall, and the fire alarm kept going off at random, which was frightening. Water pressure was so poor that using the sink, toilet or shower left the other outlets barely working. The bedding was ripped, the towel had black stains, and the windows looked like they hadn’t been cleaned in years. Avoid.

The bathroom was awful. I turned the hot water to its highest setting and still got freezing water for half an hour, and one room didn’t even have a private toilet. Both doors in the shared toilet were broken, so people could see you in the shower. It was over 200 pounds a night in advance for a family room, so don’t tell me this is just a cheap place. The beach is close, but the surrounding bars shout and play music all night. The rooms were very dirty, with muddy windows full of spider webs, a broken balcony handrail and carpet full of holes. All we had in the room was an old fan and a kettle. The owner replied very slowly and didn’t give us the full information until we’d asked for hours. There was no other support, like luggage storage.
