Near Castle Park, this is a pretty, unusual church with a long history on its current site. It was deconsecrated for many years before being reconsecrated a few years ago. Important Bristolians were baptised here, including Abraham Elton, who was Mayor of Bristol.

St Nicholas Church has a long connection with Bristol Bridge and the city's trade and growth. Its origins go back to a 12th-century church built over one of Bristol's medieval gates, though structural problems led to it being rebuilt in 1762-1769. The Bristol Blitz severely damaged it in 1940, during WWII, and it was left partly in ruins. The building was restored in 1970 and became St Nicholas Church Museum, with religious artifacts from churches destroyed in Bristol. Among the pieces it once displayed was a 16th-century statue of Queen Elizabeth I. Parts of the medieval structure, including the crypt, remain beneath it. In 2018 it was reconsecrated for worship and became home to a new congregation. It no longer operates as a regular place of worship.

The baptism itself had a lovely touch: they filled the font from a kettle at the start, so the water was pleasantly warm when our friend was baptised. I was there recently and, as someone who doesn't regularly attend church, I felt warmly welcomed. Volunteers were glad to show us the remarkable historic features, and Karen the vicar came over for a chat afterwards.
