The food was tasty and there was plenty to choose from. Our room was warm, comfortable and very clean, and the staff were friendly. Anne and Tom were excellent hosts during our pleasant stay at this pub in a beautiful scenic setting. I’d highly recommend it for the good value.

The Old Red Lion has a lovely welcome, with excellent staff and clean, modern rooms. Waking up to the scenic views was a treat. It’s a short drive from Bruton, and well worth a stay or a stop for food or a drink if you’re visiting the area or just passing by. I’d stay again if I return to Somerset.

Tom, the landlord, showed us to our room and was a great host. The views are beautiful, and the home-cooked food was delicious with generous portions. It’s a straightforward pub, and while the rooms are basic, they have everything you need.

We enjoyed watching ducks wander through the wild garden from the outdoor seating area while we had a drink. The hotel sits in the countryside overlooking a valley, with King Alfred's Tower visible in the distance. There’s a quirky, original historic bar alongside a modern, spacious hotel section. Our roomy bedroom had an en suite and, especially welcome for us, a bath. The home-cooked evening meal was wonderful, and the freshly made breakfast was one of the best we’ve had. One thing to plan for: in hot weather, I’d bring a fan. The stylish open stairwell at the end of the building is enclosed in glass, and the building can heat up. If you sleep with the windows open, pack mosquito spray, and perhaps a net and a yellow light to draw bugs to a wall. We’ve started taking those things on UK trips as well as holidays abroad as the climate changes. The room did have thick, dark curtains to help keep it shaded and cooler.

I popped in for a Sunday lunchtime drink for the first time. The bar has a great atmosphere and feels quite different from the modern section of the building. The food looks like proper traditional home cooking, so I’d recommend stopping by 😎
