The Angel at Burford

The bill was reduced to reflect that the meal hadn’t gone well, and we appreciated that, but we won’t be coming back. Four of us ate here early on Saturday evening, and the food and service were deeply disappointing. Three of us ordered soup, and every bowl arrived cold, so they had to be sent back. The duck roulade starter was bland and dry. Three of us also ordered the chicken main, and all of those meals came out cold and had to go back. We then heard another diner complain that her steak was cold too. When the chicken came back, the waitress asked my friend if she wanted fresh broccoli. My friend said yes, but asked for it to be hot. The waitress rudely replied that they could only try their best, which is the bare minimum. Later, when we ordered mango and passionfruit cheesecake, the same waitress said, “just so you know it won’t be hot.” It was rude and unnecessary, and another diner said so too. The cheesecake was completely flavourless and not worth eating. My friend’s crumble was unpleasant as well.

We didn’t stay overnight, so I can’t comment on the rooms. The pub was beautiful, the staff friendly, and I’m so glad we booked for Sunday lunch. The choice and quality of the food were brilliant and worked for everyone in our party. One of the best Sunday lunches I’ve had.

The Angel was new to us, and it made a lovely setting for Sunday lunch to celebrate my mum’s 75th birthday. The food was delicious, and the menu had something for everyone, including vegetarian and gluten-free options. Service was warm and friendly. They were happy for me to bring a small cake, and decorated the plate with ‘happy birthday’. Such a nice touch. We’ll definitely return.

We spent a fantastic evening by the wood-burning stove, eating good home-cooked food and enjoying drinks. We even made a new friend, the local dog. It’s a cosy, welcoming, real English pub, with good food and staff who were all friendly and helpful.
