The Fence Gate Lodge

Visited in August 2025. The food was well prepared and presented, and the service was excellent. After moving further south years ago, I was pleased to find the pub and restaurant still well maintained. They’ve kept their old-world charm while staying comfortable. Very nice.

I was pleasantly surprised by the meal. The starters were outstanding, especially my Sambas pil pil, and the roast venison was beautifully cooked and presented. I’d stopped coming for evening meals because I’d got bored with the menu, and the food used to be good without being exciting. The desserts still don’t do much for me, so I went for the cheese slate, while my partner loved the brullee. I don’t know if the chef has changed, but the place is back to its best.

The bar has much more atmosphere than the restaurant itself. We enjoyed the Sunday dinner, though service was slower than we’d like given the price. I’d recommend the Sunday roast or the surf and turf loaded fries.

We ate in the bar and had a fabulous time. The location is great, and both the food and service were outstanding. Well done to everyone. We’ll definitely return.
