The First and Last

It’s easy to miss from the outside, but well worth stopping for. The food was lovely and the service was great. I especially liked the haggis Bon Bon starter, and the menu has British classics done well. The front bar has an old-fashioned feel, with low ceilings and dark wood, while the dining area at the back is bright and airy. The toilets were clean, with retro blue urinals and basins from the 70s. You can pay by card or cash, and it’s right off the A1 on the way to Edinburgh. I’ll definitely come back and recommend it.

We first dropped in a couple of weeks ago, just over the Scottish Border while researching a book. We had drinks and starters, including wonderful calamari, and liked the ambience. It’s dog friendly too. A day later in Berwick, we couldn’t find anywhere for lunch that would take dogs. Some places said they were dog friendly, but their one available table was already occupied. So we came back to The First and Last Inn and got a warm welcome. The fresh fish and chips were delicious, and we also had a homemade madras curry. We’ll make a point of returning next time we’re in the area.

A definite stop if you’re nearby. Proper, decent food, owners who know their stuff, lovely staff and great locals. There’s fine whisky and local brews too, and the food is exceptional.
