I had some unexpected time to fill when an appointment was cancelled, so I stopped in on a whim. The squid starter was crisp and fresh, and its Vietnamese dipping sauce had just the right balance of heat and umami. Then came an epic burger with loads of flavour. The food was excellent, and the service was quick, polite and friendly. I felt looked after, with drinks offered at the right moments and no pressure to hurry.

After our flight from Tenerife to Gatwick, we stopped here for a meal and were made to feel very welcome. The staff took great care to make sure we had what we needed. Both the food and wine were superb, and we really appreciated the chef coming over for a chat. It’s a delightful, characterful inn and an excellent place to visit.

We had a great time here. The neighbourhood felt beautiful and safe, and there was easy parking for three cars. Our room was spacious and nicely furnished, with top-quality bed linen and towels. It was warm, the shower was hot and the bed comfortable. We arrived very late, but Mr Lewes arranged for us to collect the key after hours. Thank you.

A sunny morning made breakfast at the Old House even nicer. The food was good and the service excellent, so we’ll definitely be back. We’ve visited Butcombe pubs in Chichester and Petworth, but it had been a long time since we went to our ‘local’.

I was welcomed in the early evening by a pleasant young woman who showed me to my room. It was on the ground floor of the adjoining building, well equipped and nicely presented. The only minor issues were a toilet that didn’t flush very well and weak shower pressure. Neither really spoiled a pleasant stay, and I’d use the place again.
