They were very careful about my food intolerance, and gave me an ingredient list for everything they served. I’d just had lunch, trout with potatoes and broccoli, simply prepared and cooked well. The fish was clearly made fresh and came without much of a wait. I also enjoyed a very good glass of merlot.

We were happy to pay the above-average prices because the pub feels like an experience in its own right. Original furniture and ornaments, real fires, and everything kept in good shape give it a traditional, homely feel that makes you want to linger. We didn't stay overnight, so I can't comment on the rooms, but from the pretty courtyard they looked well maintained from outside.

The cocktails were tasty and had a good kick, and the food looked as good as it tasted. We were lucky to find a table for dinner on Friday. Ordering on the phone was handy, the drinks came quickly, and our waiter was funny and really friendly. Service was great. I'd recommend it for a nice meal out.

The lamb shank I had was really tasty, and my wife enjoyed her lovely pie. Both came piping hot. The restaurant looked good and felt cosy, at least in the first room on the right. Prices weren't cheap, but they weren't wildly expensive either, and we left full and happy. Highly recommended!
