Tyacks Hotel

The service was slow, with at least ten minutes passing before anyone took our drinks order, then another fifteen before we could get to the carvery. Lunch was awful. The Sunday carvery was tasteless, with watery, overcooked vegetables. The pigs in blankets were so processed they felt like stodgy filling wrapped in overcooked bacon. I hope the service improves for future guests.

Tyack’s is clean, basic and inexpensive. It’s a good pet-friendly hotel, with a decent breakfast and free parking.

We won’t be back. The room rate included parking in the paid zone behind the hotel, but the hotel failed to give the parking authority our registration number. We got a fine, which has since been withdrawn, but the car hire company charged us, and the hotel has refused to cover that cost despite being responsible. The room itself also needed renovation: the mattress and pillows, furniture, windows and bathroom fixtures were all in poor shape. The windows didn’t insulate, and although it was very hot, there was only a small fan. We knew there was a pub, but not that its music would carry so badly into the rooms. After it opened following dinner, guests on the first floor couldn’t sleep until it closed. Customers shouted in the street, so we couldn’t open the windows to cool down, and some even urinated in nearby shop doorways. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon hoping for rest, but the hotel was a poor fit for that.

The music was decent and the service okay, but the price was a shock. A single vodka cranberry was nearly £6. In response to the owners, across the road at whetherspoons I can get a double vodka with cranberry juice for £3.50. They might not have music, but I’d be pissed in a flash, for a quarter of what your single shot costs. Your drink was nearly twice the price of a double there.
