Clayton Hotel Cambridge

The biggest frustration was the bedding. We had a lovely super king bed, but the pillows and duvet were king size and much too small. The duvet barely covered the top of the mattress. I’ve seen this mentioned in reviews going back at least two years, so it’s poor service that it still hasn’t been fixed. Room service only had five options, there was no mini bar, and for a four star hotel I expected more. The building was tastefully decorated, the rooms were clean, and the staff were friendly and efficient. The location is handy for the train station, though it’s a bit of a walk into the centre, and there weren’t any restaurants nearby, which was irritating after a long day. The stay was pleasant enough, but the hotel missed a lot of details: no towel hooks, cheap toilet paper and tissues, no individual complimentary toiletries, no coffee machine, and a poor, limited tea selection.

It was quiet despite being central, and the heating worked well. There was plenty of hot water, a complimentary mini bar, and a clean, roomy bathroom with good lighting. The beds were comfortable too. A lovely gentleman working Wednesday night gave us a free upgrade. Everyone was helpful, friendly, and professional. I was rushing to get into the rooms after travelling since morning, so I didn’t catch his name. Everything was just what I needed.

We celebrated my daughter’s 9th birthday with afternoon tea, and the staff made it feel really special. They brought extra cakes and treats, a thoughtful birthday card, and even wrote “Happy Birthday” on her plate. Their kindness and attention made it an unforgettable day. The warm, helpful service started with my first phone call to ask about afternoon tea. The woman who helped me was knowledgeable and accommodating, which made me feel we’d picked the right place. When we arrived, the whole team kept making us feel welcome and were eager to help. I’d highly recommend the Clayton Hotel Cambridge for a celebration or special treat.

We tried the gym this time. It has a few bikes, cross trainers, a rowing machine, and free weights, and it’s nicely air conditioned. Breakfast was included, with a good choice of cooked and continental options. As usual, the staff were welcoming, friendly, and very helpful, and the room and ensuite were clean and well presented.
