The tucked-away setting is quiet, and that makes it a good place for students to get work done while still enjoying university social life. I was lucky to stay here for a couple of nights, and found it genuinely charming.

There's quality art all over the campus, which is impressive. Our annual conference keeps coming back to Murray Edwards College because it's the right size for our regular meeting. The on-site student rooms are good, the meeting rooms suit our group, and breakfast in the dome gets the day started well.

The modernist architecture is another reason to visit, and the cafe stays open quite late. I liked the smoothies there. The Women's Art Collection inside the college deserves to be marked on Google Maps. It's about a 10-minute walk from Kettle's Yard, but feels underrated. The works are hung along a sunlit corridor, and although there was a temporary exhibition, the permanent pieces in the cafe and throughout the floors were worthwhile too.

Murray Edwards is one of my favourite colleges for its architecture. Coming from Oxford, I think people have the wrong idea that Oxford and Cambridge are all quaint, with no modern buildings. This is a coherent modernist gem. The people, though, were exceedingly arrogant and rude. I was told very bluntly to check out at 9am. I politely asked whether I could have one extra hour because I had an important interview, and was told no. The porter spoke very rudely and blamed me for not checking the information carefully online. I was shocked by the lack of compassion and basic care.

It's a little outside the city centre, but worth visiting. The modern building has a huge inner courtyard with a water feature that's nice to spend time around. Inside, there are art exhibits too. The brutalist design and distinctive dome make the college stand out from the others.
