The Royal Hotel

The hotel is right opposite the pier, and I definitely plan to come back. I arrived on a Friday for two nights, a bit wary after reading negative reviews, but was pleasantly surprised. Reception was welcoming and efficient. I had a room in the duchess quarter with a lucky side view of the sea, tea and coffee facilities, a nice bathroom with toiletries, and a comfy bed. I didn't have any noise from the adjacent pub, though my room was on the other side of the building, so I can see how it might be a problem directly above it. Breakfast was superb both mornings, and the ladies serving were so helpful and obliging.

We got about five hours of sleep, and would have gone home if we hadn't had a baby with us. Other guests played loud music and shouted in the corridors at 1am. I called reception, but I'm not sure whether anyone came to speak to them. The bedroom itself was lovely and suited our needs. Breakfast was okay, though the sausages tasted horrible. It was our second visit, and sadly will be our last. Our first stay in 2020 was perfect, but this time other guests ruined it for everyone.

We come back 2-5 times a year and will keep doing so. As regulars, I can't recommend a stay here enough. The setting is beautiful at any time of year, and the comfort, service and food are unmatched, 11/11. I'd highly recommend trying it, and reckon it won't be your only stay. The staff were all great, friendly and happy, which was a positive note to end on. But the stained, dirty-looking carpets on the stairs, landings and in the bedrooms made us feel we needed to keep our shoes on. I booked and paid for two rooms, and asked for the £35 valentines package for one. Even though I was the lead guest, I was given the very small room 121, while my guests in 119 got a much bigger, better room. Why? I couldn't even move because the package had flowers and petals all over the room. It really spoiled our stay.
