Foxfields Country Hotel

The restaurant was the highlight for me. The food was excellent, portions generous and everything cooked perfectly. Service was great, and the team clearly care about what they do. I'd happily return. My room was a vast suite with a living room, bedroom and bathroom, far more space than I needed but much appreciated. The garden view made for a relaxing start to the morning. Some rooms have clearly been modernised beautifully; mine visibly needed some TLC, though it looked as if work was already planned. The bathroom had a large bath and a rain shower with plenty of hot water. The fixed shower head was at an awkward angle and needs sorting. The bath is generous enough for a long soak, so bring candles if you fancy making an evening of it. Room service is advertised on the website, but in practice it’s a delivery service: you go to the restaurant, order and pay, and then they bring the food to you. They were perfectly happy to take an order over the phone and deliver it, but there’s no phone in the room, no menu and no direct number for the restaurant left anywhere. Adding those three things would make the experience much better at very little cost. I also couldn’t charge anything to my room, which suggests the restaurant operates separately from the hotel. There were plenty of mirrors, but none positioned so you could see the back of yourself, an easy fix. Tea and coffee facilities were basic, with no alternative options. There was no iron or ironing board, just a trouser press, and without a room phone it wasn’t straightforward to ask reception for one. The fridge cupboard was screwed shut, which was frustrating. These are all small things that could be fixed. The hotel has real charm, a fantastic restaurant and loads of potential. Getting the details right could make it somewhere people actively seek out.

I was there on New Year’s Eve to photograph a wedding, and ate in the restaurant that evening. The lamb shank with seasonal vegetables and chunky chips was spot on. Both the food and service were amazing. I’d happily visit again when I’m not working.

It’s a great spot for parties and events, and the staff take good care of you from reception through to the restaurant. Room condition depends on which one you book, as some feel quite dated. If that doesn’t bother you, it’s a great place to stay.

The food was outstanding, and everyone on staff was so friendly and attentive. I really enjoyed staying here for work. What a lovely place, I’ll definitely be back.
