The Red Lion has a lot going for it, but our dinner in the bar was a letdown. Fish and chips cost £20 and arrived in a takeaway box with disposable cutlery, acidic orange ketchup sachets with no brand name, and wheelie bins for the packaging. The tables looked as though they weren't cleaned often. Upstairs felt like a Club Lounge, while the bar had a Ryanair feel. We were given a greasy gadget to tell us when to pick up our food, and there seemed to be limits on when we could eat, which made me wonder if the kitchen was short-staffed. We were asked to choose our dinner venue ahead of time. The restaurant's main dishes started at £32 and went up to £60, so we chose the bar, expecting food from the same kitchen. This wasn't what I'd expect from a £200-a-night hotel. There were good parts too. The welcome was warm, friendly and funny, our room was lovely with a sea and harbour view, and breakfast was excellent and beautifully served. The bathroom was tiny. The village is charming and the setting is beautiful, with walks in every direction if you don't mind clambering over pebbles and rocks. I understand it can be hard to find staff in a place like this and to serve so many tourists, but a diligent manager should be concerned about both the bar experience and the food.

We left before eating because the place felt so uncomfortable and unwelcoming. We hadn't stayed there or tried the fine dining, since the choices seemed to be either very expensive or very casual. We went for the casual option, and it was shocking. The food was basic and completely overpriced, and the atmosphere felt drunken, empty and a bit like a basement. There were tables with used cutlery left around, and we waited 40 minutes just to get a meal. Service was neglected, even though the waiter seemed to be trying. He was tied up chatting with drunk customers or serving at the bar next door, and our drink was brought out wrong, probably because he was trying to handle too much alone. Staff seemed limited, as did the food choices.

I was doubtful about the vegan fish and chips, but the jackfruit version was a really nice surprise. And the location is incredible.

We felt so relaxed during our stay that we added another night after booking just one at the Lion. The room was beautiful, and the food, restaurant and bar were all out of this world. Everyone on staff was incredibly accommodating and looked after us so well. We loved the warm welcome and easygoing atmosphere, and even the locals were friendly and happy to help or answer questions. The village is beautiful too. We'll definitely book a return visit. Thanks again to everyone, Sam

Everything about this place was a delight for us. The staff took such good care of us, and the food and service were second to none. They source everything locally, which is good for guests and the local economy, and worth every penny.
